And as Jesus came to the country of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples and said,
"What do they say about me being the Son of Man?"

They said then, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah and others say, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets."

He said to them, "You, however, who do you say that I am?"

Replied Simon the Rock [Peter] and said,
"You are the Anointed One, Son of the Living God."

Jesus replied and told him,
"Blessed are you, Simon son of Yoanah, that flesh and blood did not reveal it to you,
except my Father in heaven.

I am also telling you that you are the Rock [Peter] and on this rock I am building my Church,
and the doors of sheol cannot draw it in.

"To you I give the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth,
shall be bound in heaven and whatever you undo on earth, shall be undone in heaven."

20.
Then he instructed his disciples not to tell any human being that he was the Anointed One.

Jesus changes Simon's name to "Rock".

Peter was chosen by God for Jesus to pick to be the foundation of His Church.

Peter is promised that Satan will never overtake The Church.

Peter is promised the authority over The Church of Christ.

Peter is promised to be given the path to lead others to Heaven.

It has been believed by us since the beginning of Christianity and is historically documented.

There is no denying that for Christians universally, Peter is the leader of The Apostles as chosen by Jesus Christ.

Well, let's get to the bare basics here.

First of all, Jesus didn't change Simon's name to "Peter".

Jesus changed Simon's name to "rock".

If we were to be literal about it, then we'd have to use the word "cephas" which is Aramaic for the word "rock".

So, Jesus changed Simon's name to Cephas, or better said, Jesus called Simon a "rock" because nowhere in The Bible does it state that Jesus changed Simon's name, but just that He called him "rock".
