I have started my own "sub-charity" !
It is called "Good Eyes" (or "Ayin Tova"--Hebrew)
The inspiration for the name comes from both Scripture, and my visit to Turkey. In Turkey nearly everyone wears an amulet called "the evil eye". They also put it on their homes, business etc. The purpose is supposedly to ward off covetous eyes from your person and belongings. The superstition is that if someone looks at you with an "evil eye" it will bring some sort of curse. So they think that if they wear the evil eye bead, then they will be protected.
Jesus spoke about evil eyes: (pay careful attention to the context)
20"But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal;
21for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
22"The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light.
23"But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
24"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other You cannot serve God and wealth.
Having an "Ayin Tovah" (Good Eye) is important even to modern Jews. It means being generous and looking not at your own needs, but the needs of others. It means giving without expecting something in return. It means being content with what you have and not looking at other people as objects.
So, anyway, I have been making jewelry and art that is mostly religious in nature and am selling them. One hundred percent of the money will go to Catholic Relief Services. (with the option that the person who buys the item can decide which CRS project they want their donation to go toward).
I will send the money in the buyers' name and have a receipt from CRS mailed to the buyer.
Here are some of the jewelry sets that I have made. The pendents are all hand-made from polymer and paper mache)
(I also hand-made small wooden "shadow box" jewelry boxes for all the sets; there is a beautiful icon in each "window" of the jewelry box--unfortunately I have no pictures of them. )
I have more that I need to upload pictures of.
Please share your thoughts and tell me if you want to support this cause!
peace
