So, in order to jump in on the Obama bandwagon, Republicans appoint themselves a leader with poor Republican support who just "happens to be" black. Isn't it too late? Or are they going for the kitchen sink now? voices.washingtonpost.com/thefix/2009/01/steele_elected_rnc_chair.html?hpid=topnewsPersonally, I really like the man. He seems like a great man. Of course, the Republicans will now say that race had nothing to do with it. BUT! This wouldn't be the first time Steele was put up opposite Obama in a similar position. Back in 2004, Steele was tapped to speak at the Republican National Convention, eliciting comparisons with Barack Obama's keynote address at the Democratic convention. ( Source: www.usnews.com/articles/news/campaign-2008/2008/04/07/10-things-you-didnt-know-about-michael-steele.html ) But what do you guys think...did they pick the man who was most consistent with Republican Party ideology? Now Steele himself is copying Obama's moniker of "change" concerning the Republican Party (just like McCain tried to copy it for his own failed campaign). Let's reflect upon Steele's record and see how it compares to The Republican Platform shall we? WOW! The Right Wing Extremists (let's refer to them as RWE's) are fuming over Steele's election! Is there a circular firing squad forming (like the dumb Democrat Liberals did in the end years of Clinton's Presidency where they shot themselves in the foot)? So, Steele's election...coincidence? Or desperate ploy to undo their well earned image? What say ye?

LMCBO! See! I knew there was something I liked about this guy! "A devout Catholic, Steele is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Landover Hills, Md. He regularly attends services with his wife, Andrea, and their sons, Michael and Drew."Source: www.usnews.com/articles/news/campaign-2008/2008/04/07/10-things-you-didnt-know-about-michael-steele.htmlNow, if he's 100% Pro-Life and Anti-Government Funding Big Corporations and for giving money back to the people like Obama is, this man will definitely have my vote in 2012!

I knew it was too good to be true...he's another Republican just like the Republican elected candidate for President who believes that Roe V. Wade should not be done away with. Why aren't Republicans picking "Pro-Life" leaders who are 100% Pro-Life (only "partially" Pro-Life, while believing that Roe V. Wade shouldn't be overturned)? How can they be the "family values party" if their leaders won't do away with abortion? Sigh... When it comes to abortion, this country sucks big time! And that's for both the Democrats and the Republicans! No excuses! You're either Pro-Life (meaning that you're against abortion and anti-life issues 100%) or you're not! There's no such thing as "Pro-Life, but..." No way Jose.

Now I KNOW that there are some Republicans that are against him on this... ...on Civil Rights OR background on Civil Rights. Support affirmative action and its improvements. (Oct 2006) Affirmative action programs still necessary to close divides. (Aug 2006) We're still discovering affirmative action in corporations. (Apr 2006) Led commitment to $70M in grants to minority-owned business. (Apr 2006) Move struggle to right to own the diner, not just sit in it. (Oct 2005) www.ontheissues.org/senate/Michael_Steele.htmGet ready ya'll...the RWE's are going to form their own party soon!

We need more men like you Cepha! For real.
What has happened to this country? People have become so delusional(at least I hope they are not in their right minds) that they consider the collapse of the Wall Street-usury centered economy to be a tragedy, meanwhile they joyfully allow the annihilation of millions of babies with the stroke of a pen. I hate to be a doomsayer, but how much longer will God tolerate such madness?
2 LORD, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, O LORD. Renew them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy. (Habakkuk 3)

Ok, I totally think that affirmative action is not fair at all! I wrote a paper in college about it. I dont think that anyone should get a head start in front of anyone to get into a certain college because of the color of there skin, its about qualifications. Also, a big career that alot of black and white women are going for down here is a Plant Operator. Well, if a white man, white woman, black man, black women apply for the job....Here is the line up.... 1. Black women gets the job, then white woman, then the black man, then the white man.
Does that seem fair? I personally think that a refinery job is a mans job anyhow, but it should be who has the better qualifications, not color of skin.
Just my thoughts on this issue

I understand how some people may feel that way.
Personally, I don't have a problem with affirmative action. And here's why:
First, we know that progress and success usually takes more than one generation. The computer that I'm using right now may have been invented in one generation, but what about the electricity that powers it? That was discovered by others several generations ago. Not only the electricity, but also the knowledge of how to extract metals from the earth and purify them. How to create plastics and manipulate them, etc. So really, the invention of this computer must be credited to a gradual building up of knowledge over hundreds, even thousands of years.
Likewise, imagine there was a relay race in which there were several teams. Each team has 5 runners, each runner (except the last one) has to pass a baton to the runner ahead of him. However, on team #1, the first runner must run with iron shackles on his legs. Finally, he passes the baton to the next runner, who has a broken foot. Then he passes the baton to a runner whose laces are tied together. He passes the baton to a runner who has no shoes. Finally, the baton is passed to the 5th and final runner--a runner who is a world-record sprinter and has all the latest high-tech clothes and shoes. He sees that it is finally his turn to run, and begins to sprint. The only problem is that the other 2 teams have already finished the race--minutes ago.
So the last runner was definitely "qualified", but because success builds on generations, he came in last place.
Affirmative action isn't about being "fair". It is about social justice.

;D We need more men like you Cepha! For real. Thank you! I am deeply humbled! But far from the standard we should have. I ain't perfect, but where I'm right, I'm right! Well, I hear a lot of them bragging about Capitolism as one of America's gifts to the world. How can one be proud of unlimited potential to earn wealth? The only good thing about wealth is that it can be used to serve the less fortunate, but we all know how some feel about helping the poor out. They just won't have it. That's why "trickle down" economics never worked...all it did was take taxpayer money and give it to those that already had wealth (big corporations) and kept it out of the hands of the working man. I call it "reverse Robin Hoodism". We need to go back to the fiscal responsibility we showed in the late 90's where wealth was far more distributed equally among the nation population (just like they did in The Book of Acts).

How do you feel about women doing the exact same jobs as men but getting less pay for those jobs? Is that "fair"? Well, affirmative action does away with that. Do you agree or disagree with that? That in my opinion (not your thoughts, but what you said happens) is just plain stupid and is not affirmative action, but reverse racism. However, if all parties are equally qualified then the managament should represent the population of the community that they derive their workforce from (just like the military which is the fairest system in the world). Agreed? Or not?

Affirmative action isn't about being "fair". It is about social justice. peace teresa Unfortunately, it's usually only the victims of discrimination that see it that way. Those who don't go through as much discrimination as minorities do have a difficult time seeing things through the eyes of those who've been discriminated against. It's just like President Obama said...those who've lost their jobs to affirmative action who had no part in the discriminatory acts of those who came before them are paying for the sins of those that came before them. Is it fair? Do two wrongs make a right? No, but a wrong "righted" definitely makes a right.

As far I as know, affirmative action doesn't take away jobs from people. It is supposed to favor minorities and women If they are in competition for the same job and are equally qualified.
You know, this issue really hits close to home for me because my Dad has been either partially or completely unemployed off and on for many years. He is a white(Italian--as a boy he was considered a minority, and people often harrassed Italians!) , male historian with a PhD. He used to be a prof. at WVU and now has only a part-time job at a smaller college that he has to commute to. My Dad is pretty sure that his inability to get a job is because of affirmative action.
I love my Dad and obviously want him to have a really good job. But really if you look at the situation, how many of us have been taught history by white men? History at schools and colleges until recently has seemed to be "for the white man, about the white man, and taught by the white man". Having a different perspective on History is really a good idea for our country. The sad part to me is that my Dad is a really good professor that actually does teach many perspectives on history. Oy vey! and Maranatha!

Ok, The President signed a law to demand equal pay for equal work regardless of a person's sexual make-up. That is literally affirmitive action at work...taking a step to make up for past wrongs that affect people today and for current wrongs.

I am white, and i dont think a mexican or a puerto recon(sp?)lol, or black person should get the job over me just because of there race. I do believe in a diverse workplace though. Its not discrimination either, if that card is played...then i could say that the white man/woman is being discriminated against.

Funny how you put that. But what if you had gotten the job over them "because" you were white and they weren't? (Puerto Ricans! ) And what's "diverse" to you? Enough colored folk to avoid being called a racist work site? Or a place that reflects the community from which they hire? (for example: say a community is 50% white/25% black/25% native american, but the work place was 95% white with all white hiring staff, yet it could be proven that the blacks and natives were equally qualified...would you call that "diverse"?)

I dont believe in an all white workforce, no company should have all white employees.
You cant get away with being racist in the workplace now days. That is why the black women gets the job over anyone that applies. For the wrong reasons she gets hired, but i guess we owe them something...

Well, I think it's ok for a company to have an all white workforce if it's and all white community. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion. As for automatically assuming that a black woman would get a job over a white woman just because of a quota or affirmative action, we'd have to know what the history of that company was. Does it have a pattern of prejudicial hiring practices? Is there a clear pattern of discrimination? After all of those things have been taken into consideration, then one can make an informed choice on the matter.
